Signs & Symptoms

Angina itself is a symptom of CAD and the main symptoms of angina are pressure, squeezing, burning or tightness in the chest. Other general symptoms include pain in the arms, shoulders, neck, jaw, throat or back, nausea, fatigue (tiredness), shortness of breath, sweating, light-headedness or weakness, rapid or irregular heartbeat and feeling of indigestion.

It is important to note that symptoms vary based on the type of angina. In stable angina, the pain occurs due to physical exertion usually lasting for short time (about 5 minutes or less) and relieved by taking rest or medicine.

In unstable angina, the pain is severe and occurs while the patient is at rest or sleeping lasting for a longer time (as long as 30 minutes) and usually not relieved with rest or medicine.

In variant angina, the patient suffers severe pain while at night or early morning hours and is relieved by medicine (1) & (9)

In a woman, the symptoms differ slightly and the chest pain is felt like a stabbing, pulsating or sharp pain rather than the typical vise-like pressure (10)
