Treatment Options

There are no specific treatment options for CFS since there is no known cause. Thus, the treatment is symptomatic and focused on management rather than a cure. People suffering from CFS are often sensitive to medications that affect the Central Nervous System and are initially given low doses of medication gradually increasing the dosage depending on the side effects (8).

  1. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory (NSAIDs): Pain relieving medicines such as Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Tramadol Hydrochloride and Celecoxib are used for pain relief.

  2. Tricyclic Antidepressants: Low doses of these medications improve sleep and relieve mild generalized pain. Example: Doxepin, Amitriptyline, Desipramine and Nortriptyline.

  3. Other Antidepressants: Antidepressants are used to treat depression in people suffering from CFS, these include Fluoxetine, Sertraline, Paroxetine, Venlafaxine, Trazodone and Bupropion.

  4. Anxiolytic Agents: These are used to treat anxiety in people suffering from CFS. Example: Alprazolam and Lorazepam.

  5. Antimicrobials or Antifungals or Antibiotics: Depending on the type/strain of microbes, fungi or virus the specific drugs are prescribed, but these drugs cannot be deemed to treat CFS in general.

  6. Anti-allergy Therapy: Antihistamines such as Desloratadine, Fexofenadine and Cetirizine are used treat the periodic allergies (5).

Prevention Methods

Since the causes of CFS are not known, there are no known preventive methods. But care must be taken once the symptoms appear.
