Signs & Symptoms
Common symptoms of IBS are as follows:
- Pain or discomfort in different parts abdomen
easing with passage of stools and gas.
- Bloating and swelling of abdomen develops from
time to time.
- Altered stool frequency
- Some patients may suffer from diarrhea and some
others from constipation; some patients
experience diarrhea alternating with
constipation.
- Altered stool form with the stool becoming small
and pellet like, while in some others the stool
is watery or ribbony.
- Patients have a feeling of not fully emptying
their rectum after going to the toilet.
- Patients experience an urgency to attend toilet.
- Other symptoms also include nausea, belching,
poor appetite, muscle pains, heartburn and
bladder symptoms.
Some of the non-gastrointestinal symptoms include:
- Anxiety or depression
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Unpleasant taste in the mouth
- Backache
- Insomnia
- Sexual problems, such as pain during sex or
reduced sexual desire
- Heart palpitations
- Urinary symptoms (frequent or urgent need to
urinate, trouble starting the urine stream,
trouble emptying the bladder)
- Symptoms appear post-meal, during stressful times
or during menstruation (2) (9) & (10).
