Forms of Parkinsons Disease
The different forms of Parkinsons disease are:
Postencephalitic
Parkinsonism:
A disabling neurological disorder which develops
after suffering from acute encephalitis
lethargica for many years. Viral infections such
as western equine encephalomyelitis, eastern
equine encephalomyelitis and Japanese B
encephalitis are also rarely known to cause
parkinsonian symptoms.
Drug-Induced Parkinsonism:
Usage of drugs such as chlorpromazine and
haloperidol prescribed for treating psychiatric
patients, metoclopramide used to treat stomach
disorders and reserpine used to treat blood
pressure can spawn symptoms of Parkinsonism. |

Striatonigral Degeneration:
Patients suffering from striatonigral degeneration have
greater muscular rigidity and PD progresses rapidly.
Arteriosclerotic Parkinsonism or
Pseudoparkinsonism:
In Arteriosclerotic Parkinsonism, the patient suffers
from multiple small strokes that could damage the blood
vessels in the brain leading to development of dementia.
Normal drugs used to treat Parkinsonism are ineffective.
Toxin and Chemical-Induced Parkinsonism:
Toxins and chemicals such as MPTP
(1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine), manganese
dust, carbon disulfide and carbon monoxide can cause
symptoms of parkinsonism (7).
Post-traumatic Parkinsonism also called
Post-traumatic Encephalopathy and also called
Punch-Drunk Syndrome:"
Severe head injury or frequent head trauma due to boxing
or other activities may lead to development of
parkinsonian symptoms. This trauma could also lead to a
dementia pugilistica (8).
