Symptoms

Some of the common signs and symptoms of stomach flu include:

1. Pyrexia or fever ranging from 99ºF to 101ºF

2. Nausea with or without vomiting

3. Diarrhea may be bloody or with pus depending on the organism causing infection

4. Abdominal Cramps or stomach ache

5. Signs of dehydration such as little or no urination

6. Swollen abdomen or abdominal pain originating from the right lower side

7. Loss of appetite (6)

Medical Tests

A detailed medical history and physical examination are the primary methods used to diagnose the causative symptoms of stomach flu. A rectal and abdominal examination may be done in some cases to rule out possibilities of inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn’s disease) and pelvic abscesses. A stool culture is taken to identify the causative organism such as a rotavirus or a bacteria or a protozoan (7).
