Stages of Uterine Cancer

Cancer Cell Grades: Uterine cancer is classified on a three grade scale, grades that assign the way cancerous cells look under a microscope. Uterine cancer in the first grade has a close to normal appearance and develops at a slow rate, while uterine cancer in the third grade has a cancerous look and has an aggressive rate of development. The second grade is an intermediate stage between the first and third grade.

According to the FIGO Surgical System, uterine cancer is classified in 4 main stages. Each main stage is then divided into two to three substages.

Stage III: In this stage, cancer reached an advanced phase but it is still located only in the pelvis.

• Stage IIIA: In this substage, the cancer spreads toward the ovaries or cancer cells spread into the abdomen.
• Stage IIIB: In this substage, the cancer spreads and affects the vaginal area.
• Stage IIIC: In this substage, the cancer affects the lymphatic glands.

Stage IV: In this stage, the cancer spread to adjacent organs like bowel or bladder or even to distant regions.

• Stage IVA: In this substage, the cancer affects the bowel or the bladder
• Stage IVB: In this substage, the cancer spread to other regions or organs of the body like liver, lungs, or bones.

According to FIGO Clinical Staging System, uterine cancer is classified into the following stages:

Stage 1: In this stage the tumor affected just the uterine body.

• Stage 1A: In this substage, the uterine cavity measures 8 or less centimeters.
• Stage 1B: In this substage, the uterine cavity is larger than 8 centimeters.

Stage 2: In this stage, the tumor affected the cervix area.

Stage 3: In this stage, the tumor spreads to the adjacent pelvic structures.

Stage 4: In this stage, the cancer spreads massively to the entire pelvic cavity or affected distant organs and areas.

• Stage 4A: In this substage, the tumor affected the bladder or rectum mucosa.
• Stage 4B: In this substage, metastasis are present.
