There is a wide range of alcohol treatment
facilities available for those that seek professional
help in addressing their alcohol addiction. All treatment
facilities have different methods, philosophies and
unique policies and rules to guide them. The main
differences between the facilities is:
- The type of services offered.
- The type of program used such as 12 steps, gender
specific, age specific ( youth and teens ),
Christian based, or holistic type of program.
- The type of facility available, inpatient or
outpatient, a hospital setting, or more casual
with residential facilities.
- The financial cost involved. Some treatment
programs can be very expansive running up to
$40,000 for a 30-day program, while others are
more affordable and even free. Some facilities
accept Medicare or Medicaid, some are covered by
the insurance while other facilities accept only
cash.
Types of Alcohol Treatment Facilities:
1. Outpatient Treatment Services. This form of
treatment is also known as a day treatment program and is
designed for those that meet some or all of this
criteria:
- Only recently became addicted to alcohol and
although their lives are being hurt by their
drinking, it is not completely destroyed.
- They still have an extensive social support
system (family & friends).
- Can stay sober for 72 hours and are highly
motivated.
- Are employed and due to the occupational and
family life cannot follow an inpatient type
treatment.
- Are in their second phase of recovery after they
followed an inpatient type program.
The main goal of such treatment is to inform the
person about the chronic nature of their problem, teach
them the most efficient skills to help them cope with
their addiction while trying to manage a normal life
inside and outside the family. Patients following an
outpatient type of alcohol treatment are required to
attend therapy sessions, support group meetings, and
other types of recovery activities several hours per day
for three to five days a week according to a
predetermined therapeutic plan and schedule.
2. Inpatient Treatment Facility. An inpatient
alcohol treatment program offers a more comprehensive
approach to what alcohol addiction is and its treatment.
Inpatient programs are designed to help those that have
battled alcohol addiction for many years with numerous
attempts to recover but failed. One of the initial steps
of this programs is detoxification ( detox ) that helps
resolving the problems associated with the physical
dependency. The advantage of an inpatient treatment is
that the alcoholic is removed from their environment and
can completely focus on their recovery.
The inpatient treatment programs offer extensive
supportive services that include individual and group
therapy and activities that address mental, spiritual,
and occupational aspects of the addiction. The alcoholic
is encouraged to express themselves, learn and talk about
their problems, and listen with others who share similar
problem in a safe environment assured by a well trained
staff.
Inpatient programs can vary in length from short term
treatments of 21 to 45 days, to longer term treatments
that can last one year or more.
