Bone Cancer Stages

An important prognostic predictor for bone cancer is the clinicopathologic stage. The most common staging system used for cancer is the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM system.

According to this system, the survival predictors in patients with bone cancer are 1) the level of the bone cancer invasion and 2) the number of lymph nodes affected. The TNM system refers to: (T) the tumor features -size and invasion level; (N) the lymph nodes involved (lymph nodes are part of the body immune system); (M) the cancer metastasis. Metastasis stage is the last developmental cancer stage when the cancer has spread to distal organs (organs situated far from the point of origin).

T Stage for Bone Cancer

T0: No evidence of a tumor are present.

T1: The size of the tumor is around 8 cm or less.

T2: The size of the tumor is larger than 8 cm.

T3: The tumor spread to other parts of the same bone.

N Stage for Bone Cancer

N0: The cancer has not invaded nearby lymph nodes.

N1: The cancer spread to nearby lymph nodes.

M stage for Bone Cancer

M0: There are no distal metastasis (far distance organs from the origin point are not affected).

M1: The cancer spread to distant organs.

M1a: The cancer spread only to the lungs.

M1b: The cancer spread to other organs.
