Signs & Symptoms

Some of the common signs and symptoms of cardiomyopathy include:

1. Shortness of breath: This is a very common symptom occurring due to congestion of lungs with fluid. The poor pumping action of heart leads to accumulation of fluid in the lungs.

2. Swelling: Fluid accumulates in legs, ankles, feet and abdomen (Fluid accumulation is called Oedema).

3. Palpitations and Fainting: Rapid heartbeat or fluttering of heart or abnormal heart rhythm leads to loss of consciousness.

4. Tiredness: A weak heart cannot pump adequate blood to limbs during physical activity causing tiredness.

5. Chest Pain: In some types of cardiomyopathy, the patient may experience crushing, squeezing chest pain that radiates to the neck, jaw, back, shoulder and arm (10) & (12).

6. High Blood Pressure

7. Loss of appetite

8. Wide variation in urination events including low urination in daytime (Oliguria) and increased urination during nights (Nocturia) (3).
