Signs & Symptoms

Children suffering from cerebral palsy exhibit a wide range of signs and symptoms. Since cerebral palsy is not progressive, the symptoms do not worsen with age. The most common symptoms include:

1. Lack of muscle coordination while performing voluntary movements (ataxia).

2. Stiff muscles and exaggerated reflexes (spasticity).

3. Asymmetrical walking gait, with one foot or leg dragging.

4. Variations in muscle tone, from too stiff to too floppy.

5. Excessive drooling or difficulties swallowing, sucking or speaking.

6. Tremors.

7. Difficulty with precise motions, such as writing or buttoning a shirt (5).
