Conditions & Diseases: Hair Loss & Hair Loss Treatment (Surgical & Non-Surgical)

Dutasteride (Avodart)

Dutasteride is an FDA approved for the treatment of benign prostratic hyperplasia (BPH). Although not approved by the FDA as a medication for hair loss, it is being investigated as such because of it's similarities to Finasteride.

Dutasteride is in a class of medications called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It works by blocking the production of a natural substance that enlarges the prostate.(1) According to the manufacturer, dutasteride inhibits type 1 and type 2 enzymes responsible for the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, the primary cause of prostate growth.(2).

Dihydrotesterone (DHT) is the culprit behind hair loss in 95 percent of men. Since dutasteride is a proven "DHT blocker," the logical reasoning is that dutasteride is effective for treating hair loss, just like finasteride. However, as a treatment for hair loss, dutasteride is not FDA approved.

Dutasteride is marketed under the brand name Avodart and is only available by prescription.

“In trials, Dutasteride is up to 30% more effective than Propecia for hair regrowth […]. Dutasteride inhibits the activities of two types of 5-alpha-reductase enzymes. In contrast, Propecia (Finasteride) only inhibits one type. (3)

Compared to finasteride, dutasteride is considered "stronger" and thus has stronger side-effects which include: Abnormal ejaculation; decreased interest in sexual intercourse; decreased sexual performance or desire; impotence; inability to have or keep an erection; loss in sexual ability, desire, drive, or performance; swelling of the breasts or breast soreness.(1)

These side-effects are not common and patients should consult with their doctor if they appear.
