Signs & Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of Fibromyalgia Syndrome include:

1. Pain: People having FMS suffer from chronic widespread pain. Generally the pain and stiffness are worst in the morning and the patient may feel more hurt in muscle groups that are frequently used such as those of shoulders, neck, back and other areas around joints.

2. Fatigue: The fatigue in patients suffering from FMS could be profound and interfere with all daily activities. Many patients experience difficulty in performing iterative activities such as typing due to increased pain and fatigue.

3. Sleep Disorder: Most patients suffer associated sleep disorder called the alpha-EEG anomaly. They also cannot have a deep, restful and restorative sleep. Patients may also suffer from sleep apnea wherein she/he temporarily stops breathing and burs of awake-like brain activity that interrupts a deep sleep.

4. Muscle Stiffness: Muscle stiffness is observed in patients on their awakening and tends to improve during the day but may remain for the whole day. The joints may feel swollen without any inflammation.

5. Headache: More than 50% patients complain of recurrent migraine and other types of headaches.

6. Impaired Cognitive Function: This includes memory failure, poor working memory and impairment in concentration, coordination and vocabulary retention.

7. Hypersensitivity: Patients suffering from Fibromyalgia report of heightened sensitivity to temperature, odors, sounds, lights and vibrations.

 

8. Mood disturbances: Some of the common symptoms include irritability, depression and anxiety. Presence of these symptoms may be due to various factors including:

  • Prolonged pre-diagnosis period
  • Disrespectful medical treatment
  • Grief and loss common to any chronic illness
  • Poor support
  • Sleep deprivation

9. Co-existing chronic health conditions

  • Severe chronic pain
  • Neurotransmitter abnormalities

10. Some of the other symptoms include:

  • Dry eyes and mouth
  • Rashes
  • Excessive menstrual pain
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and ear pain
  • Painful intercourse
  • Dizziness
  • Vision problems
  • Low-grade fever
  • Below-normal temperature

11. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): FMS patients exhibit symptoms of IBS such as constipation, diarrhea, frequent abdominal pain or both and nausea.

12. Many patients with FMS have symptoms of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome that causes bladder pain, urinary urgency with more frequency of urination.

13. Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ): Some patients with FMS show signs of Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome such as limited jaw movement, clicking, snapping or popping sounds while opening or closing the mouth, pain in facial or jaw muscles in or around the ear or headaches (1), (6) & (7) .

14. Many Fibromyalgia patients exhibit diurnal (daytime) variation in energy levels and alertness.
