Guillain-Barré Syndrome
Treatment Options
There is no cure for Guillain-Barre Syndrome but the treatments help
reduce severity. Only two treatments, namely plasma exchange therapy (plasmapheresis)
and intravenous serum globulin (IVIG), have proven to be effective. (3)
Plasmapheresis:
Plasma is a clear, watery fluid part of the blood. Treatment involves
removing plasma from actual blood cells and returning the plasma into
the body after removing harmful parts so that blood cells can produce
healthy plasma.
Intravenous Serum Globulin:
Immunoglobulin or serum globulin is another name for antibodies. High
doses of healthy immunoglobulin drawn from blood of various blood donors
can help block and act as effective antibodies. (1)
Prevention Methods
There are no prevention guidelines for Guillain-Barre Syndrome. (8)
