Treatment Options

The treatment options for high blood pressure/hypertension include:

I. Medications - Some of the medications used to treat HPB/Hypertension include:

  1. Diuretics: Diuretics help kidneys flush excess water and salt from body, thus lessening fluid in the body and consequently also lessening the blood pressure.

  2. Beta Blockers: Beta blockers reduce the speed of heart beat enabling the heart to pump less blood through blood vessels and subsequently reduce the blood pressure.

  3. Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors: These drugs prevent the production of a hormone named Angiotensin II, which causes the blood vessels to narrow.

  4. Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs): These drugs directly block the action of Angiotensin II enzyme.

  5. Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs): These drugs prevent the entry of calcium in muscle cells of heart and blood vessels, allowing the blood vessels to relax and bring down the blood pressure.

  6. Alpha Blockers: Alpha blockers reduce the nerve impulses that tighten the blood vessels enabling the blood to flow more freely and reducing blood pressure.

  7. Alpha-Beta Blockers: These drugs also reduce the nerve impulses similar to alpha blockers. In addition they also slow down the heart beat like the beta blockers thus bringing down the blood pressure.

  8. Nervous System Inhibitors: These drugs increase the nerve impulses from brain to relax and widen the blood vessels leading to reduction of blood pressure.

  9. Vasodilators: These relax the muscles in blood vessel walls which reduce the blood pressure (12).

II. Lifestyle Changes as Prevention Methods:

  1. Following a healthy eating plan, such as eating a low fat, low sodium diet.

  2. Regular physical exercise.

  3. Maintaining a healthy weight.

  4. Quit smoking.

  5. Managing stress and learning to cope with stress.

  6. Moderate use of alcohol can protect from heart disease but excess usage can increase one's blood pressure.

  7. Cutting back on salt consumption.

  8. Restricting the consumption of coffee or tea on a daily basis.

  9. Relaxation therapies such as meditation (13).
