Signs and Symptoms

Unfortunately, in most cases, lung cancer is asymptomatic in its early stages, and the symptoms usually occur when the cancer has reached advanced stages or had spread to other organs. The most common lung cancer symptoms include:

  • A persistent cough that does not go away and gets worse over the time.
  • Constant chest pain.
  • Coughing up blood or phlegm with signs of blood in it.
  • Ache or pain when coughing or breathing.
  • Hoarseness.
  • Fatigue.
  • Wheezing.
  • Unexplained weight loss.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Recurrent respiratory infection such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
  • Lungs congestion.

In some cases, some patients can experience the following symptoms:

  • Swallowing difficulties.
  • A hoarse voice.
  • Neck and face swelling (caused by a blockage in the main blood vessels from the head area).
  • Pain or discomfort under the ribs on the right side.
  • Breathing difficulties (shortness of breath caused by the fluid collected around the lungs).

These symptoms are usually experienced by patients with cancer in an advanced stage.

Lung cancer symptoms can be similar with other, more common respiratory disorders. Always consult with your physician. A correct and early diagnosis can substantially increase the survival rate for a lung cancer patient.
