Stages of Pancreatic Cancer

According to the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), there are 5 stages of pancreatic cancer:

Stage I: Cancer tumors are confined to the pancreas.

Stage II: The tumors have not spread to the duodenum, bile duct, and peripancreatic tissues but do NOT involve regional nodes and distal metastasis (distant organs being affected).

Stage III: The tumors may have or may not have spread to the duodenum, bile duct and peripancreatic tissues, but it DOES involves the regional nodes without distant organs being affected.

Stage IVA: The tumors spread to the stomach, spleen, large bowel, or to adjacent large vessels and involve regional nodes without distal metastasis (distant organs being affected).

Stage IVB: The tumors spread to adjacent areas and organs involving regional nodes AND distal metastasis (distant organs do become affected).

Another method of staging the pancreatic cancer useful in establishing a treatment plan involves the following categories:

Resectable: All the tumor nodules can be removed.

Locally advanced: The cancer spreads to adjacent areas and tissues of the pancreas or into the blood and lymph vessels and it cannot be completely removed.

Metastatic: In this phase, the cancer spreads to distal organs like the liver and lungs.
