Medical Tests & Diagnosis Methods/Tools

There are no specific lab tests or blood tests to diagnose Parkinson’s disease. A thorough neurological examination and medical history are performed by a neurologist to make a presumptive diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease. Imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans are done only to rule out other diseases with similar primary symptoms of PD. However, another imaging test, called a Positron Emission Tomography (PET), is done to detect dopamine levels in the brain that may be useful to diagnose PD in the early stages (8) & (13).
