Trigeminial Neuralgia
Forms of Trigeminal Neuralgia
Trigeminal neuralgia is categorized into the following
seven forms:
-
Typical Trigeminal Neuralgia: This
is the most common form and was previously termed as classical, idiopathic
and essential trigeminal neuralgia.
-
Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia: This
is characterized by severe, unilateral, prominent constant and burning
pain over the typical TN symptoms.
-
Pre-Trigeminal Neuralgia: A few days
or years before the first attack of trigeminal neuralgia patients
experience odd sensations in trigeminal distributions that have the
potential to be affected by trigeminal neuralgia; these odd sensations/pain
(toothache) may be symptoms of pre-trigeminal neuralgia.
-
Multiple Sclerosis-related Trigeminal Neuralgia:
The symptoms and characteristics of multiple sclerosis related trigeminal
neuralgia are similar to those of typical trigeminal neuralgia.
-
Secondary or Tumor related Trigeminal Neuralgia:
Trigeminal neuralgia caused by a tumor is called secondary trigeminal
neuralgia.
-
Trigeminal Neuropathy or Post-Traumatic Trigeminal
Neuralgia: Injury to the trigeminal nerve caused by cranio-facial
trauma (for example a car accident), dental trauma, sinus trauma (such
as after Caldwell Luc procedures), may lead to a painful condition
called trigeminal neuropathy or post-traumatic trigeminal neuralgia.
-
Failed Trigeminal Neuralgia:
When medication or surgical interventions cannot effectively control
trigeminal neuralgia, the condition is termed failed trigeminal
neuralgia (5).
