Signs & Symptoms

The three most common symptoms of ulcerative colitis are:

1. Persistent or recurrent bloody or mucus diarrhea.

2. Abdominal cramp pains immediately before bowel movement which are intense and painful.

3. Fever (4).

In addition, the following symptoms may also observed:

• Anemia
• Fatigue
• Loss of weight
• Loss of appetite
• Rectal bleeding
• Loss of body fluids and nutrients
• Skin lesions
• Joints pain
• Growth failure in children
• Arthritis
• Eye inflammation
• Osteoporosis (5).

Symptoms of Ulcerative colitis can be mild to severe irrespective of the portion of colon affected with the condition fluctuating between periods of active disease (flare-ups) and inactive periods known as remission (2).
