Lap Band, or laparoscopic adjustable gastric
band is a device that is implanted during
bariatric surgery which seeks to restrict food
intake by decreasing the size of the stomach. The
device itself is a silicone prosthetic which is
inflatable and placed around the upper portion of
the stomach with the aid of a laparoscope. The
adjustable lap band surgery option is for obese
patients with a body mass index of 40 or greater,
and 35-40 in severe cases.
