Obstetrics is a medical speciality concerned with the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the immediate postpartum period. It is often studied and practiced in conjunction with gynecology, another medical speciality that focuses on functions, diseases and disorders of the female reproductive system. This dual specialty allows physicians to provide a wide range of medical and surgical care. Their duties often include: prenatal, pregnancy, and childbirth care, preventative care, treating sexually transmitted diseases, pap tests, as well as aiding couples who are having difficulties in becoming pregnant. With more training, OB/GYN's can subspecialize in: Gynecological Oncology, Infertility, Fetal Medicine, Urinary tract disorders and more.
