Syphilis Skin Pictures

Definition: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the Treponema pallidum spirochete. It is transmited by sexual contact or through the placenta - which leads to congenital syphilis. Symptoms occur in stages. Primary stage, chancre filled with spirochetes most often in a sexually active region, but can occur elsewhere. Secondary stage, malaise, nause, vomiting, fever, bone and joint pain, skin rash, and mouth sores. Third stage, soft tumors (gummas) that ulcerate and then heal, leaving scars, they may form anywhere in the body and may or may not be painful. Various parts of the ody, including the heart, nervous system, and lungs may be damage, leading to death. These three stages occur over a prolonged period, often 15 or more years, before the tertiary stage takes hold.
